URBAN OBSERVER
A series of candid, documentary-style photo essays exploring human experience in shared public spaces.
Urban Observer is a long-term photographic project exploring human presence within the architecture of a city. My approach was shaped early on in my home, Harlem, where moving through the neighborhood meant learning how to observe without being seen. That feeling of being present without interrupting still guides how I make these images. Rather than chasing spectacle, I want to notice what is already there, the quiet moments of stillness, tension, and connection within our everyday rhythms. These photographs are entirely unposed, reflecting a deeply observational commitment to life as it is, rather than how it might be directed. Cliff Jernigan

“In Proximity” explores the spaces people share, even when they don’t mean to do so. Whether they are just crossing paths or are somehow connected, the nature of their interaction is open to interpretation. These photographs invite us to think about what’s revealed in the proximity people share.
